7 Items You Should Absolutely Remove from Your Garage

ban-cHas your garage become the dumping ground for everything that doesn’t have a place in your home? It may be the time to take inventory of your belongings to determine if you need to trash, sell, donate, recycle, or relocate any of them. Orlando garage floor company, Garage Design Works, has compiled a list of things you may risk spoiling or damaging if you garage is not climate-controlled.

  • Canned Foods: Particular beans and tomatoes will spoil if left in a garage that is 95 degrees or higher. Even at 70 degrees, the shelf life of these products will shorten. If the room is tight in your pantry, check out some shelving units that might help you make more space in there.
  • Paper Goods that are Open: Paper plates, napkins, and paper cups become bedding for mice and insects. Definitely find some space in your kitchen cabinets to store them.
  • Electronics: Used computers, TVs, or DVD players that you no longer want should be donated or recycled. Otherwise, they could get damaged from the extremes of heat and cold.
  • Propane: This gas for your grill can be a fire hazard if stored in your garage. Make sure the tanks are stored outside where there is better air circulation.
  • Legal or Financial Documents: Licenses, passports, recent tax records, as well as birth and marriage certificates can be damaged by the moisture in an overheated garage. Move them to the house and store them in a fire proof box in your home office.
  • Paintings and Photographs; These can fall victim to mold and moisture when the temperatures rise.  Store your paintings in a painting rack inside the house away from any sources of heat. Find space in a closet in your home to house your cherished photos.
  • Wooden Furniture: When stored in an overheated garage, this furniture is prone to too much expansion and contraction, damaging the structure and sometimes the finish. Warping is also a possibility if the moisture settles on your furnishings. Rent a climate-controlled storage unit to store your tables and chairs.

Storing items that could be destroyed by heat, cold, humidity, or moisture in your garage is not a good idea. Likewise, keeping hazardous materials in this poorly ventilated space could cause damage to your home.
